Education

At MRCU, we believe that public education is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against mosquitoes. By empowering residents and visitors with the knowledge to recognize, prevent, and eliminate mosquito breeding sites, we can collectively reduce the impact of mosquitoes on the Cayman Islands' health and environment.

Our education program is designed to raise awareness and encourage proactive mosquito control at both the community and individual levels. We offer a variety of resources and initiatives to inform the public on effective mosquito management, such as:

  • Brochures, Fact Sheets, and Newsletters: Clear, easy-to-understand materials that provide essential information on mosquito prevention and control.
  • Community Engagement: Participation in local events, fairs, and community group presentations to spread awareness and answer questions.
  • Media Outreach: Public service announcements, radio and newspaper ads, and social media campaigns to keep the public informed and involved.
  • Direct Support: Our team is always available to assist through service requests, offering on-the-ground advice and support for property owners.

By working together, we can create a mosquito-free environment. MRCU is committed to providing the resources, knowledge, and support necessary to help you take action and protect both your family and community from mosquito-borne diseases.

Mosquito Basics

Mosquitoes (Order Diptera, Family Culicidae) are among the most adaptable and successful insects on Earth, thriving in a wide range of environments. These pests can breed in virtually any collection of water, whether natural or man-made. They have even been found in mines nearly a mile below the surface and on mountain peaks as high as 14,000 feet. In fact, if you know where to look, it’s very likely there are mosquitoes breeding in your own backyard.

While not all mosquito species pose a threat to humans, many can have significant negative effects. Mosquitoes are easily identified by their long, piercing proboscis and the scales on their wing veins. In the Cayman Islands, approximately 35 species of mosquitoes are found, with only a few being responsible for transmitting diseases. However, many others are nuisance species that greatly affect people’s quality of life.

Mosquitos Prevention & Control

Effective mosquito control requires a comprehensive and environmentally sound approach that combines several control methods. This integrated strategy, known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), ensures that all possible methods are utilized to reduce mosquito populations sustainably. When specifically targeting disease-carrying mosquitoes, this program is often referred to as Integrated Vector Management (IVM).

At MRCU, our mosquito control program begins with identifying mosquito species and measuring their population through larval and adult surveillance. Based on this data, we implement the most effective and environmentally sensitive control measures available. These may include water management to reduce breeding sites, biological control methods like planting mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), and, when necessary, pesticide applications to target breeding areas or adult mosquitoes.

Educational Video Library

MRCU offers a comprehensive library of educational videos designed to inform the public on all aspects of mosquito control and prevention. These videos provide valuable insights into the lifecycle of mosquitoes, the latest control techniques, and practical steps you can take to reduce mosquito breeding sites on your property. Stay tuned for updates and new releases!
