Protecting Public Health & Enhancing Quality of Life - Tyler Scott - I AM a Civil Servant

For more than a decade, Tyler Scott has proudly served his country as part of the Civil Service. Now working as a Disease Prevention Officer within the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) office on Cayman Brac, Tyler is part of a team whose work safeguards the health and well-being of residents and visitors alike.

When asked what inspired him to join the Cayman Islands Civil Service, Tyler says it was “the need and want to help and contribute to my country in any way possible.” That simple but powerful motivation – the desire to serve and better his community - continues to guide his work today, 11 years into his career.

Protecting Today, Safeguarding Tomorrow

Established in 1965, MRCU plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and the environment. Using a research-based and integrated approach, MRCU works to reduce mosquito nuisance levels and prevent mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

As a Disease Prevention Officer, Tyler contributes directly to this mission. His work supports the unit’s goal of creating a healthier, mosquito-free environment through environmentally responsible practices. “By keeping the mosquito population under control, we help protect public health and contribute to a better quality of life for residents and visitors,” he explains.

Through a combination of physical, biological, and chemical techniques, MRCU teams across all three islands maintain safe mosquito levels. The Cayman Brac division, where Tyler is based, plays an important role in protecting both the community and the island’s natural environment.

Commitment to Service and Growth

Tyler’s journey in the Civil Service has been one of steady dedication and growth.

Having served in various capacities over his 11 years, he has embraced each learning and training opportunity available to him. When asked which of these opportunities he has found most valuable, Tyler’s answer is simple: “Basically, any and all training is valuable, as they not only help in your career but also in personal development.”

But Tyler’s appreciation for the Civil Service extends beyond the professional development it offers; he values the sense of community, support, and shared purpose that come with being part of an organization dedicated to serving the public.

When faced with challenges, the support systems within the Civil Service have made a meaningful difference in his life. “Extended leave was a life saver during a difficult time,” he notes, emphasizing how the organization not only values the work of its employees but also their well-being.

Finding Reward in Service

For Tyler, every aspect of his work brings a sense of satisfaction and pride.

“Honestly, I love all aspects of my job,” he says. “I find joy in contributing to the health and safety of the public.”

That dedication is evident in the daily efforts of the MRCU teams across the islands; from conducting field research to applying control measures and continuously improving techniques to ensure the best possible outcomes for the community. MRCU’s mission is rooted in science, service, and care, and their tireless efforts reflect the very best of what it means to be a civil servant.

Beyond the technical aspects of his work, Tyler takes pride in being part of a collaborative and supportive team. “I’m glad I have the opportunity to work alongside great people who share the same goals and values,” he shares. Together, their shared commitment ensures that the Cayman Islands remains a safe and healthy place to live, work, and visit.

Encouraging the Next Generation

When asked what advice he would give to someone considering a career in the Civil Service, Tyler’s response is simple but heartfelt. “I could only encourage them to try it—especially if they have a passion for helping others and making a difference in their community.”

This sense of purpose – for helping others and serving one’s country – has guided Tyler throughout his career, and his work at MRCU stands as a reminder that the contributions of civil servants, whether in research, health, or operations, play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of everyone in the Cayman Islands.

Tyler exemplifies the Civil Service’s core values of passion, integrity, and professionalism, and he shining example of those who work behind the scenes to keep the Cayman Islands safe, healthy, and thriving.
