National Heroes Day 2024 - Why We Celebrate

9 January 2024 | Blog | By: CIG Communications

What forms the bedrock of a nation's identity? Is it the equity of its laws, the robustness of its financial system, or the abundance of its natural resources? Here in the Cayman Islands, we believe that the essence of our nation lies in the resilience and dedication of our people. Our communities were fortified by the men and women who, through their strength, built prosperous businesses and established the democratic system that our government upholds to this day. The Cayman Islands, now standing tall, owes its progress to the unwavering will and passion of our National Heroes.

Recognising and honouring our heroes is a cherished duty, and it is made simpler by the fact that our nation is relatively young. The stories of our heroes have been passed down through generations, and each passing year, we honour persons who are continuing to enhance the Cayman Islands through their skills, resources and talents.

Since 2003, every fourth Monday of January has seen us gather in Heroes Square to pay homage to the past and celebrate the men and women who have devoted themselves to the Cayman Islands. Awards and special recognition are bestowed upon members of the community for their efforts in nation-building and preserving the Caymanian spirit. Surrounded by family and those who appreciate their contributions, the recipients and nominees are celebrated in a heartwarming ceremony.

National Heroes Day is not only about honouring the past but also about recognizing the present. Since the enactment of the National Heroes Law in 1993, ten Caymanians have been named National Heroes. Visionaries like Hon. James Manoah Bodden and trailblazers like Hon. Sybil Ione McLaughlin, MBE were among the firsts in shaping our political landscape. Others, like Hon. William Warren Connolly OBE and Hon. Thomas William Farrington CBE, played pivotal roles in enacting key legislation and developing essential infrastructure.

Yet, the builders of our nation extend beyond political figures. Social movements, shared culture, language, and history serve as the binding forces among Caymanians. The creation of a national identity transcends ethnicity, focusing on shared ideals such as the protection of youth, a steadfast connection to faith, and a commitment to preserving our cultural essence.

Heroes like Hon. Sybil Joyce Hylton MBE and Hon. Leila Elberta Ross-Shier Cert. Hon., who championed advocacy for disadvantaged youths and contributed to our cultural heritage through storytelling and music, embody these shared ideals. By remembering and celebrating these women, along with all national heroes, we reinforce the values that define Caymanian identity and pass them down to future generations.

For over two decades, we have celebrated our community stalwarts who play pivotal roles in the continued growth of our nation. This year, we focus on "Celebrating Cultural Artisans and Creatives," - individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellence through their artistic and creative endeavours. The honourees have used the arts to shape Caymanian culture and inspired others to do the same, both locally and abroad.

Join us at the National Heroes Day 2024 award ceremony in Heroes Square on Monday, January 22, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, and the Celebration of Culture on Cardinall Avenue from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
