Overview

On behalf of Her Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Jane Owen, the Cayman Islands Judicial and Legal Services Commission invites applications for the position of: MAGISTRATE.

Duties and Responsibilities

As one of a bench currently comprising four magistrates (including the Chief Magistrate), the post-holder will be responsible for the conduct in Summary Court of cases regarding criminal, traffic, youth justice, juvenile (care and protection), maintenance/affiliation, and summary court civil matters, and coroner’s inquests. 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Candidates must: 

  • have a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience in the practice of law and be qualified to practice as a lawyer in the Cayman Islands, the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the Commonwealth
  • possess a sound and thorough knowledge of the particular areas of law which this post needs, and have the ability to interpret and apply local legislation and case law in making decisions; 
  • possess excellent research, analytical, oral and written skills (in addition to basic computer skills); 
  • be able to command the respect of the legal profession and the community, and possess absolute personal integrity; 
  • be able to demonstrate procedural fairness in all cases and deal tactfully and courteously with all participants as well as with the public; 
  • be a person of maturity and sound judgement, possessing strong communication and listening skills; and 
  • demonstrate conscientiousness and a strong work ethic, complemented by expertise in time management. 

The post-holder should preferably have: 

  • experience of drug trials, particularly importation and trafficking cases; 
  • experience in firearm possession cases; 
  • experience in handling matters referred to diversionary or specialist treatment courts; and 
  • a willingness to take part in various pilot projects in the Summary Court aimed at a more restorative approach to matters which may lead to the promulgation of legislation for the establishment of new specialist courts. 

The post-holder will be subject to a Code of Conduct promulgated by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission, may receive an appointment to the age of 70 with benefits determined in accordance with the Judges Allowances and Emoluments Law (as amended from time to time).
