Shariffa joined the Civil Service as a young Caymanian seeking a career that offered both professional growth and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to her country. At the start of her working life, she was drawn to public service for its stability and its ability to provide a strong foundation for long-term development. 

“As a young Caymanian starting out in the workforce, I wanted a career that offered stability, professional growth, and an opportunity to contribute to my country,” she explains. “The Civil Service provided a strong foundation to build meaningful experience while giving back to the community.” 

Her journey spans 15 years of combined service, including six years in Cayman Brac and nine years in Grand Cayman. This experience has allowed her to develop a broad understanding of public service and the important role civil servants play across different areas of government, including collaboration with the private sector in support of national priorities. 

Serving Through the Department of Agriculture 

In her current role with the Department of Agriculture, Shariffa contributes to work that supports the agricultural sector in the Cayman Islands. Agriculture remains important to national resilience, food security, and sustainability. The Department supports government initiatives that strengthen local production and encourage responsible practices that benefit both the community and the environment. 

Agriculture also plays a supporting role in broader national outcomes, including community wellness and public health, by contributing to access to fresh, locally produced food that complements wider healthcare objectives. 

As a Crop Extension Officer, Shariffa supports these efforts through her professional responsibilities, applying her skills in a way that aligns with the Cayman Islands Government’s broader objectives. Her work reflects the steady and consistent service delivery that underpins public confidence in government institutions.

“I’ve had multiple opportunities to participate in professional development programmes, all of which have helped enhance my skills and strengthen my ability to serve effectively,” she says.
