The Cayman Islands Civil Service plays a vital role in delivering public services that strengthen communities and support national development across Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Within the portfolio of the Civil Service, civil servants serve in diverse roles that contribute to economic growth, sustainability, and the overall well-being of Caymanians, upholding world-class standards of governance within the wider Caribbean region.

Among these dedicated civil servants is Shariffa Chantilope, a Crop Extension Officer in the Department of Agriculture, whose career reflects the values of service, stability, and continuous learning.

A Career Inspired by Purpose

Shariffa joined the Civil Service as a young Caymanian seeking a career that offered both professional growth and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to her country. At the start of her working life, she was drawn to public service for its stability and its ability to provide a strong foundation for long-term development.

“As a young Caymanian starting out in the workforce, I wanted a career that offered stability, professional growth, and an opportunity to contribute to my country,” she explains. “The Civil Service provided a strong foundation to build meaningful experience while giving back to the community.”

Her journey spans 15 years of combined service, including six years in Cayman Brac and nine years in Grand Cayman. This experience has allowed her to develop a broad understanding of public service and the important role civil servants play across different areas of government, including collaboration with the private sector in support of national priorities.

Serving Through the Department of Agriculture

In her current role with the Department of Agriculture, Shariffa contributes to work that supports the agricultural sector in the Cayman Islands. Agriculture remains important to national resilience, food security, and sustainability. The Department supports government initiatives that strengthen local production and encourage responsible practices that benefit both the community and the environment.

Agriculture also plays a supporting role in broader national outcomes, including community wellness and public health, by contributing to access to fresh, locally produced food that complements wider healthcare objectives.

As a Crop Extension Officer, Shariffa supports these efforts through her professional responsibilities, applying her skills in a way that aligns with the Cayman Islands Government’s broader objectives. Her work reflects the steady and consistent service delivery that underpins public confidence in government institutions.

Commitment to Learning and Growth

A defining feature of Shariffa’s career has been her engagement with professional development opportunities within the Civil Service. She credits these experiences with strengthening her ability to serve effectively and grow within her role.

“I’ve had multiple opportunities to participate in professional development programmes, all of which have helped enhance my skills and strengthen my ability to serve effectively,” she says.

Continuous learning is a cornerstone of the Cayman Islands Civil Service. By investing in training and development, CIG supports civil servants in building the knowledge and competencies needed to meet evolving demands across public services. For Shariffa, this commitment to learning has been an important part of her professional journey.

The Value of Stability in Public Service

Stability is another aspect of Civil Service that Shariffa values highly. It allows civil servants to focus on delivering quality service while planning for the future. This stability supports long-term commitment and reinforces the importance of public service as a viable and rewarding career path for Caymanians.

Through her years of service, Shariffa has experienced how this stability enables growth, encourages dedication, and supports a strong sense of responsibility to the public.

Advice for Future Civil Servants

When asked what advice she would offer to those considering a career in the Civil Service, Shariffa emphasises patience, commitment, and openness to learning.

“Be patient, committed, and open to learning,” she advises. “The Civil Service offers many opportunities for growth, and with dedication, you can build a rewarding career.”

Her advice reflects the realities of public service, where professional development and progression are built over time through consistency and effort.

Pride in Serving the Cayman Islands

At the heart of Shariffa’s story is a deep sense of pride in serving her country. Her closing reflection captures the spirit of the ‘I Am a Civil Servant’ series featured across gov.ky, Department of Communications channels, and social media.

“God bless the Cayman Islands. It is an honour to serve.”

Shariffa Chantilope’s journey is a reminder that the strength of the Cayman Islands Civil Service lies in its people. Through dedication, continuous learning, and a commitment to service, civil servants like Shariffa contribute quietly but meaningfully to the country’s progress, reinforcing trust in public institutions and pride in national service.
