World Drug Day - Uniting for a Healthier Future

26 June 2025 | Press Release |

Today, on World Drug Day (26 June 2025), the National Drug Council (NDC) joins communities across the globe in raising awareness about the devastating impact of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, and in highlighting the importance of prevention, treatment, and recovery support.

This year’s theme, “Together for a Drug-Free Future,” underscores the importance of partnership. Families, schools, faith-based organisations, government agencies, and civil society all have a role to play in addressing drug misuse and promoting a healthier future.

World Drug Day, formerly known as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, serves as a global call to action. With the rising availability of synthetic drugs, increasing rates of addiction, and the toll substance misuse takes on individuals and families, this day reminds us that no single entity can tackle this challenge alone. It takes coordinated, compassionate action.

“We believe that through education and meaningful engagement, we can empower individuals to make informed choices and build resilient communities,” said Ms. Brenda Watson, Director of the National Drug Council. “As we mark over 27 years of prevention service in the Cayman Islands, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering hope, reducing stigma, and promoting access to support.”

The 2025 campaign places a strong emphasis on treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy, providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritising early intervention, and leading with compassion.

Organisations, educators, healthcare providers, and community leaders are encouraged to observe World Drug Day by hosting workshops, school sessions, community outreach initiatives, and public education activities that promote prevention and awareness.

Individuals can show their support by:

Sharing personal stories of prevention, recovery, or support to help inspire others and reduce stigma
Attending Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or other local support group meetings to access or offer peer support
Distributing or promoting access to local resources, including the NDC’s Resource and Referral Guide, available on our website at www.ndc.ky
We encourage everyone to explore the information available and help connect others to services that support healthier, drug-free lives.
