Welcome to CIG Earth Week 2024

22 April 2024 | Blog | By: CIG Communications

I’m very excited to welcome everyone to CIG’s Earth Week 2024!

Like many of you, over the past few years I have become increasingly concerned with the trajectory that the world is on in terms of climate change and sustainability.  There are few, if any, days that go by without a headline reminding us that our global climate is changing and our biodiversity is under threat. Unprecedented storm events, extensive wildfires, killer heatwaves, record-breaking droughts and floods are just a few examples of the impacts that are already being felt around the world.

While everyone may not agree on the causes of these changes to our global climate and biodiversity, I think that everyone can agree on the data that is showing very clearly that we are breaking temperature records, rainfall amounts and patterns are changing, some species are being pushed to the brink of extinction, and there is an increasingly urgent need to take action.

While it can be disheartening and discouraging to see some of those headlines and see the data, I am also increasingly encouraged by the stories I see that give me cause for optimism and hope.  Stories that show how people are taking steps to improve the sustainability and climate resiliency in their homes, workplaces, and the wider community.  Inspiring stories that show that by working together, innovatively and creatively with a shared purpose of being part of the solution, anything is possible.

Many of you already know how passionate I am about the Civil Service and the important work we are all doing to “Make Lives Better”, and how proud I am of the progress that we have made on our journey to becoming a World Class Civil Service.  You may also know that I am an advocate for innovation and future-focused thinking, and I do not shy away from critically assessing the work that we do and identifying and embracing opportunities to be innovative, creative, and simply do it better.

I am a firm believer that the Civil Service can, and should, lead by example and set a standard of excellence in the work that we do for the people of the Cayman Islands.

As the largest employer in the Cayman Islands, I believe the Civil Service has a unique opportunity to positively impact the Cayman Islands’ sustainability and climate resiliency by focusing on our organsiational practices and taking steps to make them more sustainable and climate resilient.  If, as an organization, we are able to reduce our carbon emissions, reduce the amount of waste we generate, and embed sustainability and climate resiliency into our organsiational decision making, then I know that this will result in benefits for us as an organization, and the Cayman Islands as a whole.

I want the Cayman Islands Civil Service to be the most sustainable and climate resilient employer in the Cayman Islands.  While this is certainly an aspirational goal, I absolutely believe that if we work together we can achieve it.

To help us get started on our path toward this goal, I have created a new Chief Sustainability Officer role in the Office of the Deputy Governor and appointed Jennifer Ahearn, who was previously the first Chief Officer for the Ministry of Sustainability and Climate Resiliency, to the CSO role.  I have asked Ms. Ahearn to help chart our course to increased organisational sustainability, working collaboratively across the Civil Service to identify opportunities for action, shine a spotlight on the many examples of excellence and best practice in sustainability in our organization, and create a network of Sustainability Champions and Green Teams across our CIG agencies.

In recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd,  the Chief Sustainability Officer has been working with a dedicated team of Civil Servants to put together a week of activities centred around daily themes.  For CIG Earth Week 2024, we have some fantastic lunchtime webinars, a trivia competition, some tree-planting, and even some guided nature walks around the Government Administration Building.  There are so many ways to get involved!

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to those Civil Servants who have been part of the planning team as well as those who are supporting the various events.  I am very excited see your plans coming to life, and I am looking forward to an exciting and engaging week!

I hope that everyone will make commitment to participate in at least one of this week’s activities, and that CIG’s Earth Week 2024 will lead to some engaging dialogue, information sharing, and spark some ideas on steps we can take, individually and collectively, to make progress toward becoming the most sustainable and climate resilient employer in the Cayman Islands.
