The Importance of Wellness
By The Wellness Committee Co-Chairs, Jodiann Jackson and Alicia Reid
Achieving Sustainable Development requires striking a harmonious balance among the triple bottom lines of "people, planet, and prosperity." This ethos is vividly illustrated by the United Nations' comprehensive framework of 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), among which SDG 3 —Good Health and Well-Being—holds paramount importance for the “people” bottom line.
The World Health Organization (WHO) encapsulates wellness as "...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Wellness transcends being a mere concept; it embodies a personal voyage towards optimal health, rooted in conscientious choices that augment overall well-being. This journey extends beyond physical health, encompassing social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, and intellectual wellness. Embracing wellness equates to investing in one's health and happiness, fostering a holistic approach to life.
Visualized through the wellness wheel, each category provides a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of wellness. At the heart of nurturing this ethos lies the CIG Wellness Committee, a dynamic assembly comprising individuals from diverse Ministries and Departments across various sectors. Their collective mission centers around cultivating a culture and ecosystem conducive to supporting and advocating for the value of health and wellness. Through educational endeavours, initiatives, and engaging events, the Committee empowers individuals to prioritize their well-being.
As a catalyst for change, the Committee is instrumental in identifying, endorsing, implementing, and overseeing wellness initiatives and policies within the CIG framework. By collaborating with established wellness entities internally and externally, the Committee aims to provide CIG staff with the tools, resources, and initiatives to proactively manage their health and well-being. This includes distributing newly designed newsletters, which serve as a valuable conduit for updates on wellness-related matters.
If you're passionate about wellness and eager to contribute, the Committee welcomes individuals who share their zeal to join their ranks.
