Official Funeral Held for Former MP Austin O. Harris Jr.

Her Excellency Governor Jane Owen, Minister for Caymanian Employment and Immigration Hon Michael Myles, Acting Premier Hon. Gary Rutty and Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson stand in observance for the last post and ceremonial gun salute.
The Cayman Islands Government accorded an official funeral to former Member of Parliament for Prospect, Austin O. Harris Jr., to honour his life and distinguished public service. The service was held at the Church of God Chapel, George Town, on Sunday, 22 February. The event was attended by Mr. Harris’ family, government officials, parliamentarians and members of the wider community.
Acting Premier, Honourable Gary Rutty, delivered a tribute on behalf of the Cayman Islands Government, noting. “His four years were marked by incredible opportunities, challenges and many firsts, making his a most eventful and active term. He was forthright, certainly. But he was also principled. Those who knew him well, recognised that beneath the firmness was care - care for Cayman, care for his people, care for the integrity of public life. He was willing to say what was uncomfortable if he believed it was necessary. And he did so not to divide, but to sharpen our collective thinking.”

In the days preceding the funeral, the Government had several solemn observances to honour Mr. Harris’ legacy. These included a private flag-lowering ceremony at the Government Administration Building on 19 February and Lying in State at the House of Parliament on 20 February. Members of the public also were invited to pay their respects by signing condolence books made available during this period. Recordings of the Lying-in-State and the official funeral service are available on the Cayman Islands Government YouTube channel for viewing.
