Maritime Administration Enhances Safety and Security

8 December 2025 | Press Release | By: Monique Pryce

The Cayman Islands Maritime Administration successfully completed training for the use of the Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system, which provides global identification and tracking of ships to enhance maritime security, improve search and rescue operations, and support marine environment protection. The LRIT for Maritime Domain Awareness Training for the Coastal State was coordinated by the National Maritime Affairs Secretariat under the Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce (MFSC). The joint departmental training session in November included the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (Air Transport Unit), the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands, Hazard Management Cayman Islands, the Department of Environment, and the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI).

MFSC’s Acting Chief Officer, Kathryn Dinspel-Powell, stated that the training underscores strong inter-agency cooperation that continues to enhance maritime safety and security across the jurisdiction. She noted that it reflects the Cayman Islands’ ongoing commitment to excellence in maritime oversight, safety at sea, and international compliance.

The training was conducted by Pole Star Global, the Cayman Islands’ LRIT service provider.

Pole Star Global works closely with the International Maritime Organisation and government agencies worldwide, delivering LRIT products and services that support both flag-state responsibilities and ship-operator needs. Pole Star Global’s partnership with MACI and other Cayman Islands entities remains integral to strengthening maritime domain awareness throughout the region.

Director of Government Relations and Affairs at Pole Star Global, Maura Massana, said it was a pleasure to work with the Cayman Islands’ maritime and emergency-response teams. She noted that their strong commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement ensures that LRIT remains a powerful tool in strengthening maritime domain awareness and protecting those who operate at sea.
