I Am a Civil Servant: A Transformative Journey

Meet Zhané Rambaran, a dedicated Financial Administrator within the Portfolio of the Civil Service. In her role, she oversees vital finance functions such as budgeting, accounting, payroll, and reporting. What fuels her passion? The thrill of solving complex challenges daily that benefit the community she loves.
"Problem-solving is something I naturally enjoy, and it’s incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts directly impact the team’s efficiency and our community," Zhané shares. "Seeing my contributions support the team’s success is a huge motivator for me."
Rising Through the Ranks
Zhané embarked on her Civil Service journey with an internship in the Ministry of Education’s Finance Team from May 2015 to March 2019. In May 2020 she was appointed as an Accounts Officer. Her dedication and hard work propelled her to the role of Financial Administrator in just two years, showcasing her commitment to excellence.
A Transformative Internship Experience
Initially aspiring to become a pharmacist, her experiences during her Ministry of Education internship shifted her focus toward a career as a chartered accountant. Her manager, who saw her natural gift in finance, kept encouraging her to consider going into this field. That supportive and fostering environment transformed the path this young chemist had planned for herself.
"I gained hands-on experience in government financial procedures, which made me comfortable with industry tools and best practices," she explains. "Working in a fast-paced environment taught me how to prioritise tasks and communicate effectively across departments. Looking back now, I couldn’t be happier that those around me encouraged me to dream beyond what I thought was possible."
Lessons in Empathy and Understanding
Throughout her journey, Zhané has learned the paramount importance of empathy. Engaging with individuals from all walks of life has deepened her understanding of their unique needs, which is crucial for delivering effective solutions.
"I’ve always been an empathetic person who cares deeply for the needs of others. I’ve learned that this is a great tool to have, as empathy is the foundation for building trust and fostering collaboration, ensuring that the Civil Service truly benefits everyone in the community."
That empathy underlies her passion to serve and ultimately led her to be honoured as the CIG Employee of the Year for 2023, for her contributions to the Civil Service’s strategic goal of Delivering Exceptional Customer Service.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Zhané is determined to continue her professional growth and aims to gain her ACCA qualification. With a commitment to lifelong learning, she plans to pursue further credentials that will enhance her skills and knowledge.
Zhané also envisions taking on leadership roles within the Civil Service, where she can mentor others and contribute even more significantly to her community.
"I want to inspire the next generation of civil servants and ensure that our work continues to make a meaningful impact," she shares.
Envisioning Mentorship Opportunities
As a young Caymanian setting off to build a career, Zhané knows the benefits of supportive mentors and aspires to one day join the mentorship programme as a mentor within the Civil Service. She believes in the power of creating a structured environment where experienced professionals can guide newcomers, sharing valuable insights and practical experiences.
"I want to help create opportunities for young civil servants to connect with mentors who can help them navigate their careers," she explains. "By providing guidance on skills development, networking, and career planning, we can empower them to reach their full potential."
Zhané also hopes to organise workshops and training sessions that focus on critical areas such as financial management, communication skills, and problem-solving techniques. By fostering a culture of support and collaboration, she aims to ensure that new employeesalso have the same experience she had and feel confident and equipped to make meaningful contributions.
A Call to Aspiring Civil Servants
When asking fellow civil servants about Zhané’s endearing qualities they will most often say she is super friendly, caring and helpful.
Something they might not know is that hanging above her head each night is a sign that says, “Little girls with dreams become women with vision” – and she is actively pursuing that vision!
Zhané encourages those considering a career in the Civil Service to take the plunge.
"Working in the Civil Service is incredibly fulfilling. It offers a unique opportunity to make a real impact on our community and on our beloved isles. While it comes with challenges, it is rewarding to know that your work contributes directly to improving local services and preserving our rich heritage."
