Honouring National Heroes Day

First celebrated in 2003 as part of the Quincentennial commemorations, National Heroes Day has become one of the Cayman Islands’ most significant cultural events. It is a day of vibrant celebration, heartfelt tributes, and shared national pride, as well as a powerful reminder of who we are as a people and our bright future.
This special day invites us to honour the individuals who have shaped our islands and to celebrate the Caymanian spirit – resilient, innovative, and deeply connected to our community. But what makes this day so significant, and why should you be part of it?
The Beginning of a Proud Tradition
The first National Heroes Day in 2003 formalised our collective gratitude for those who made extraordinary contributions to the Cayman Islands. It was a bold step towards preserving our heritage and ensuring future generations remember the giants on whose shoulders we now stand.
Yet, the roots of this important day stretch further back. In 1993, the Legislative Assembly enacted the National Heroes Law, establishing a framework to honour individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the Cayman Islands. The Honourable James (Jim) Manoah Bodden was the first to receive the prestigious title of National Hero in 1994, and the Honourable Sybil Ione McLaughlin, the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, was named as our second National Hero in 1996.
Who Are Our Heroes?
Our National Heroes reflect the diverse strengths and values of Caymanian society. From trailblazers in politics, such as Hon. Ormond L. Panton, OBE, founder of Cayman’s first political party, to the compassionate advocacy of the Honourable Sybil Joyce Hylton, MBE, who championed disadvantaged youth.
The Honourable Thomas William Farrington, CBE, JP, a former legislator and public servant, and the Honourable Desmond V. Watler, CBE, OBE, Cayman’s first Treasurer, were key figures in establishing the foundations of our modern governance. Similarly, the Honourable Mary Evelyn Wood’s pioneering efforts brought transformational change to these islands.
Cultural contributions also hold a place of honour. The Honourable Leila Ross-Shier, composer of our National Song, “Beloved Isle Cayman,” was a prolific writer and cultural icon whose work inspires pride in our heritage. The Honourable Dr Roy Edison McTaggart, a founding father of our nation, devoted his life to advancing our islands’ prosperity through visionary leadership.
However, National Heroes Day is not just about the names etched into our history. Each year, we recognise our everyday heroes – members of our community who, through their actions and dedication, have made the Cayman Islands a better place to live. Seafarers, artists, philanthropists, service members, and former political leaders whose actions went above and beyond those of an ordinary citizen.
Why Does This Day Matter?
When we recognise our heroes, we do more than honour the past – we forge the path for our future. We inspire our youth, strengthen our cultural identity, and uphold the values that have defined our nation for over 700 years.
For civil servants, this day carries a special meaning. Many of our National Heroes, such as Hon. Thomas William Farrington, CBE, JP, and Hon. Desmond V. Watler, CBE, OBE, were themselves civil servants. Their dedication laid the groundwork for our islands’ success across multiple industries for which we are now globally recognised as leaders. By serving our community with integrity and passion, we honour their memory and safeguard their legacy. Our government was built by the men and women we recognise as our National Heroes, but it is continually strengthened and protected by the fortitude of a world-class civil service.
