The Scholarship Secretariat Unit
The Scholarship Secretariat provides administrative services for the delivery of the scholarships programmes for the Ministry of Education, namely the Education Council Scholarship. This includes:
- Management, review and processing of applications;
- Provision of students who possess the Right to be Caymanian with scholarships and grants to support their tertiary education either locally or overseas;
- Monitoring the scholarship process to ensure recipients are compliant with scholarship guidelines
- Facilitation of promotional and educational activities for current and future awardees.
- Disbursement of funds and provision of career guidance/counselling to students as required.

The Government Educational Scholarship does not fund the foundation year as this year does not contribute to the degree. It is a pre-qualification year that, on completion, allows the student to gain acceptance to Year 1 of the degree programme. If you have further questions on this, email: scholarships@gov.ky.
Overseas undergraduate studies are funded up to $30,000 KYD per annum for up to four years. Overseas postgraduate studies are funded up to $35,000 KYD per annum for up to two years for masters studies, and up to three years for doctoral studies. Funds are disbursed to the student in two equal payments – Fall (August/September) and Spring (December/January) for on campus studies. Different protocols apply for online studies. Local scholarship amount varies per scholarship, per level and per institution. You can email scholarships@gov.ky to receive information specific to the area of interest. However, the funds are paid to the institutions directly and not to the individual students.
No, scholarships are not approved for persons at the same level of study that they have already attained, whether or not the qualifications were funded by the Cayman Islands Government.
Yes, you can defer your studies for up to one year from the scholarship award. If you are already enrolled in the course of study, you must provide approval from the institution and as well as an explanation with supporting documentation for your decision to defer.
The Education Council who is appointed by the Minister of Education, reviews, approves, or declines all applications against the criteria outlined in the Education Council Policy & Procedures Guide.
Yes, your scholarship award includes an agreement that you are bonded to return to the Cayman Islands for the length of time of the scholarship award. Failure to do so can result in the request for repayment of the full sums awarded. You can request to defer your bond for up to three years from completion – this will need to be approved by Education Council.
You can ensure that you complete the application as directed, and that you provide all required documents including updated information in a timely fashion during all aspects of the scholarship from applying for to maintaining your scholarship.

FAQs
Caymanians who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for the grant:
- Currently employed in an industry related to the TVET programme they are applying to, intending to improve their skills or advance their career.
- Currently employed in an industry unrelated to the TVET programme they are applying to, planning to switch to a career in the technical or vocational industry.
- Unemployed and seeking employment in an industry related to the TVET program they are applying to.
To apply for the TVET grant, visit the Scholarship Secretariat Unit's website at www.moescholarships.gov.ky and complete the LOCAL TVET GRANT application. You will also need to upload a copy of the following documents along with your application:
- Recent photo ID
- Birth certificate
- Proof of right to be Caymanian
- Acceptance letter from a registered TVET institution
- Character Reference
The acceptance letter must be typed on the institution letterhead, with the name of the applicant, the name of the programme of study, the duration of the programme of study and the costs of the programme of study clearly visible.
Applicants can submit their applications at any time of the year. However, decisions will be released every quarter to the applicants.
Each learner can receive a grant of up to $15,000.00 per year.
The grant is overseen by a Ministerial TVET Grants Committee.

Government High Schools Scholar Award

FAQs
Successful students will receive up to CI $100,000.00 in funding per year throughout their course of study (maximum of 4 years).
Two scholarships will be awarded each year-one to the top female scholar and another to the top male scholar once they meet all the criteria.
Eligible candidates must be Caymanian and have:
- Attended a government high school in the Cayman Islands for the last four (4) consecutive years;
- Sat all external examinations from within the public high school;
- A minimum of ten (10) cumulative Level 2 passes, with the following minimum grades: "A", "1", or Distinction;
- Gained acceptance at a highly competitive university, as listed on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 100 Top Universities, for the current academic year.
Successful candidates have up to three years to claim the scholarship award.
The Testing & Examinations team within the Department of Education Services (DES) will select the Government High School Scholars based on criteria set out in response to question 4.
If more than two persons tie for the award, and no apparent academic solution is determined, all students involved will be awarded the scholarship.
No recipients will be named for the year.
To maintain the Government High School Scholar Award, the recipient must: maintain a 3.5 GPA with a probation of 3.25 (US Grading System) or 1st class honours with probation of Upper 2nd Class (65%) (UK grading system).
If a student cannot maintain the Government High Schools Scholar Award, they may access the standard overseas scholarship once said criteria are met.
Students must return to the Cayman Islands within three years of their final graduation or repayment of 50% of the scholarship.
