Delivering Results: Creating Conditions for Others to Succeed

In this blog, Matthew Hylton, Deputy Chief Advisor & Head of the SRIU, highlights how delivering results is not only about achieving outcomes, but also about empowering others to grow, contribute, and succeed. By fostering accountability, trust, and collaboration, we can create meaningful and lasting impact.

Have you ever accomplished something you didn't think you were capable of, simply because someone believed in you?

Most of us can point to a time in our careers when a manager, colleague, or mentor trusted us with a challenge that felt bigger than our experience. While the task itself may have been important, the confidence they placed in us often had an even greater impact. It pushed us to grow, learn, and discover capabilities we may not have recognised in ourselves.

When we think of delivering results, our minds often go to meeting deadlines, achieving targets, or completing projects. These are all important measures of success. However, delivering results is about more than simply getting the job done. It is about creating positive outcomes that have a lasting impact. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work alongside leaders who invested in my development. They provided opportunities, encouraged new ideas, and supported me as I took on greater responsibilities. Looking back, many of the results I achieved were only possible because someone first created the conditions for me to succeed.

Those experiences changed how I view delivering results. While accountability, focus, and action remain essential, I have learned that some of the most meaningful results are achieved through others. When people feel trusted, supported, and empowered, they are more likely to take ownership, solve problems, and contribute their best work.

This lesson became particularly important as I moved into leadership roles myself. Early on, I believed leaders were expected to have all the answers. Over time, I realised that effective leadership is not about knowing everything. It is about bringing people together, asking the right questions, encouraging different perspectives, and creating an environment where others can thrive.

Whether we supervise a team, mentor a colleague, or simply support someone through a challenging task, we all have opportunities to help others succeed. Sometimes the greatest result we deliver is not a completed project or achieved target, but the confidence, capability, and growth we help build in another person.

At its core, delivering results is about turning intentions into meaningful outcomes. It is about maintaining high standards, taking ownership, and remaining focused on what matters most. Equally important, it is about creating an environment where people feel trusted, supported, and empowered to contribute their best work.

There are several ways we can strengthen our ability to deliver results:

  • Take ownership of our responsibilities
  • Focus on solutions rather than obstacles
  • Support the growth and development of others
  • Communicate clearly and collaboratively
  • Learn from challenges and setbacks
  • Stay committed to achieving meaningful outcomes

The leaders who invested in my development helped shape the professional I am today. One of the most meaningful ways I can deliver results is by creating those same opportunities for others. When we focus not only on what we achieve, but also on the people we help grow along the way, we create results that extend far beyond any single goal or target.
