Young Caymanians Encouraged to Register for Financial Literacy Programme

The National Youth Commission is renewing its call for Caymanian youth aged 14-25 to join the Financial Literacy Progamme (FLP). The FLP is a free, internationally recognised learning pathway designed to build confidence in budgeting, saving, investing, and informed financial decision-making. Participants who complete the programme and achieve a minimum of 80% on the final assessment will be awarded CI$250. Interested persons can register and find more information by visiting the National Youth Commission’s website at www.nationalyouthcommission.ky.
Launched in 2025, the FLP represents a key milestone in the Commission’s commitment to empowering young Caymanians through education, leadership, and financial independence. The programme is centred on the McGill Personal Finance Essentials course, delivered by professors from McGill University. It includes eight core modules and two bonus modules and is offered in three-month learning blocks, allowing participants to progress at their own pace around school, work, and family commitments.
Hon. Isaac Rankine, Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage stated, “The Ministry is pleased to support the Financial Literacy Progamme because it will prepare our young people to be financially independent and confident in making real-life financial decisions. This initiative aligns with our Ministry’s priorities but also the Government’s broader objective to equip and empower our youth.”
This year marks a significant enhancement to the programme for participants on Cayman Brac. With the support of local educators, participants will now be able to complete the final in-person assessment in Cayman Brac—improving accessibility and enabling greater participation from youth in the Sister Islands.
Hon. Nickolas DaCosta, JP, MP, Minister for District Administration and Home Affairs, welcomed the update and underscored its value for youth development, noting that the change “makes it easier for young people to take part, complete the programme, and benefit from skills that will serve them for life—budgeting, saving, and responsible decision-making.” He added that “supporting youth development in the Sister Islands is central to building stronger communities, and I encourage eligible young Caymanians to register and take advantage of this opportunity.”
Brittany MacVicar, Chairperson of the National Youth Commission, highlighted the scale and significance of the initiative, calling it a major opportunity to support up to 1,200 young people through the generosity of private donors. She noted that the programme demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships to create opportunities that might not otherwise exist. MacVicar encouraged all eligible young people to apply, emphasising that while participation requires only a few hours, the benefits can last a lifetime and serve as a first step toward financial independence.
