PLAHI Reminder: Vehicle Importation Rules for Returnees

1 August 2025 | Press Release | By: PLAHI PR

The Ministry of Planning, Lands, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure (PLAHI) is reminding the public of important amendments made in 2024 to the Customs & Border Control (Prohibited Goods) (Amendment) Order, which provide greater flexibility for returning Caymanians. Under the amendment, Caymanians (including students) who have lived overseas for at least one year and are returning home to take up residence may now import provided that they have owned the vehicle for at least one year prior to importation.

This amendment lifts the previous restriction that prohibited the importation of vehicles older than eight years and supports smoother reintegration for returning Caymanians—particularly students transitioning back to island life.

In addition, the amendment allows for the importation of specific vehicle types that were previously restricted if over eight years old. These include:

  • Lorries or truck trailers and other vehicles used for transporting heavy goods/equipment
  • Delivery vans, motorcycles, and scooters
  • Special-purpose vehicles (e.g., ambulances, fire engines, and vehicles adapted for persons with disabilities)
  • Exhibition vehicles from North America and Europe that are at least 20 years old

Senior Deputy Director of CBC Kevin Walton previously noted:
“In line with the government’s objective to improve the quality of life for Caymanians, these amendments enable returning Caymanian students to bring their vehicles home as they settle back on the island. Additionally, it supports local business owners and individuals with specific needs by expanding access to vehicles previously restricted.”
