One of the most immediate benefits of the Cayman Islands Identification Card, My eID, is that it provides official Government-issued proof of identity and Cayman immigration status. This is relevant to every civil servant, both personally and in day-to-day service delivery.

When proof of identity and immigration status is required

Confirming identity and immigration status is not limited to travel or banking. It is required in a range of routine situations, including:

• Attending an appointment
• Completing a transaction
• Accessing a government or private service
• Travelling between the Sister Islands
• Preparing for or responding to an emergency

Under DVDL’s revised, two-tier fee structure, Caymanians pay a lower fee than non-Caymanians for driving licences and related services, and Caymanians purchasing longer-term licences receive additional discounts.

DVDL determines the applicable fee using approved Government information to verify a customer’s immigration status. Where immigration status cannot be confirmed electronically, the transaction is referred for manual verification, which can add time to the visit. My eID gives Caymanians a straightforward, Government-issued way to prove their immigration status at the point of service, supporting faster and more consistent verification.

It is particularly useful where a simple, portable Government-issued ID is more practical than carrying larger paper documents.

Professionally, Government services frequently require residents to prove identity or immigration status before a request can be processed. As civil servants, when we understand how My eID works as proof of identity and immigration status, we are better positioned to consider how it may be accepted within our own service area and how it may improve our customers’ experience.

Supporting privacy in identity verification

My eID also supports privacy-conscious identity use. Proving identity or immigration status should not require oversharing personal details, and this principle is reflected in the card’s design.
