MRCU Invites Public to Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week Events

The Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) is inviting the public to take part in a series of activities planned for Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week, taking place from 11 to 15 May 2026.
The week will feature a live drone demonstration at Festival Green, Camana Bay on Tuesday, 12 May, at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and1:30 p.m., along with an Open House at MRCU Headquarters, located at 99 Red Gate Rd., George Town (next to the Water Authority), from Wednesday to Friday, 13 to 15 May, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The drone demonstration will give members of the public an opportunity to see MRCU’s large mosquito control drones in action and learn more about how the technology is used to support mosquito control operations across the Cayman Islands.
The Department of Agriculture’s Animal Protection team will also be present during the drone demonstration, sharing information on how to help protect pets and animals from diseases mosquitoes may pass on to them.
During the Open House, members of the public will have the opportunity to view MRCU’s lab, meet research and operations staff, learn more about the products used in mosquito control operations, and see equipment up close. The event is designed to give the community a better understanding of how mosquito control operations are carried out across the islands and the role the public can play in reducing mosquito breeding around homes and communities.
MRCU staff will also share practical guidance residents can take home, including plants that may help deter mosquitoes, as well as plants and yard features that can collect water and support mosquito breeding.
Additionally, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is currently hosting an Instagram Reel Competition as part of Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week. Members of the public are encouraged to create and share short videos that promote mosquito awareness, source reduction, and community action. Two winners will be selected overall, with one winner chosen per cycle, and each will receive a USD $500 Amazon gift card.
Residents can learn more about the competition, including rules and entry details, here: CARPHA Instagram Reel Competition.
Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week provides an opportunity to strengthen public education and community engagement around mosquito control, while encouraging residents to play an active role in reducing mosquito breeding around their homes and communities.
MRCU encourages members of the public to attend, bring a friend, family member, or coworker, and help share the information throughout the community.
