Fuelled by Purpose: John Wesley

When you walk into John Wesley’s office, chances are you’ll find it stocked with
more than just files and office supplies. You’re likely to be greeted with a cheerful
smile, a stash of well-chosen snacks, and the energy of someone who finds true joy in the simple act of making others feel supported.
As an Office Manager and Audit Assistant in the Cayman Islands Civil Service,
John may wear many hats, but his passion for service shines through them all. Just under two years into his journey, he’s already carved out a space for himself as someone who brings excellence, integrity, and a touch of everyday kindness to his role.
A Career Rooted in Service
Through his role, John brings a unique blend of reliability, technical skill, and light-
hearted warmth to the workplace. Balancing multiple responsibilities across general accounting, internal audit support, and office operations, his day-to-day work requires both precision and adaptability. From processing purchase orders and monthly accruals to helping plan audit fieldwork and solving minor IT issues, John’s contributions are essential to keeping his department running smoothly. And yet, it's the simplest task that brings him the most joy: restocking the office snacks.
“I love restocking the dietary supplies the most as I love to see the happy faces with the different types of snacks I provide to my colleagues”, says John! It’s a small gesture that says a lot - about his attentiveness, his appreciation for team morale, and his belief that the little things can have a big impact. For John, making others feel seen and supported is just as important as getting the numbers right.
Motivated by Impact
What inspired John to join the Civil Service wasn’t just the potential for career growth - it was the opportunity to make a real difference in his country. “I wanted to say to myself that I was a part of making the wheels turn,” he reflects. “Whether it was through the service I deliver or through community engagement.” That sense of purpose continues to be a guiding light in his work. Whether handling financial reconciliations or assisting in internal audits, John sees every task as a chance to contribute to the bigger picture - “I believe the civil service is a great place to work because integrity, accountability and excellence are valued, and this creates an uplifting workplace environment.
Growth Through Learning
John's journey within the Civil Service has already included opportunities for key
learning and development experiences, such as his participation in several Internal Audit conferences, which John credits with broadening his professional perspective. “These conferences allowed me to broaden my skills and open my eyes to see different perspectives,” explained John. In his view, one of the greatest assets of the Civil Service is the emphasis it places on continuous learning and skills development. From conferences to online resources such as LinkedIn Learning, there’s always an opportunity to expand knowledge and grow.
John also values the internship programmes offered to young Caymanians, recognizing them as a powerful gateway for others to find their footing in the public sector, just as he has! A Culture of Integrity and Opportunity. When asked what makes the Civil Service such a great place to work, John’s answer is clear: it’s about culture and values. “The civil service is a great place to work” he says, “because integrity, accountability and excellence are valued, and this creates an uplifting workplace environment.” John believes this culture of support is what allows civil servants like himself to thrive. “There are also opportunities for growth and training that could be beneficial for your future,” he adds.
Looking Ahead
Though he is still relatively early on in his journey as a Civil Servant, John’s dedication and spirit are already making an impact, and he plays an essential role behind the scenes in ensuring that government systems, staff, and support structures operate smoothly.
Whether he’s managing audit logistics or simply bringing a smile to his colleagues’
faces with a snack and a good attitude, John’s dedication is a reminder that every
role in the Civil Service has the potential to create positive ripple effects. As John continues his journey, he remains committed to building a career rooted in purpose, and to doing his part to keep the wheels of government turning, one thoughtful act at a time.
