Canada Post Suspends Mail Due to National Labour Strike

26 September 2025 | Press Release | By: Brandon Jackson-Swaby

The Cayman Islands Postal Service (CIPS), advises the public that the acceptance and dispatch of all mail to Canada has been suspended effective immediately. This action follows a formal request from Canada Post in response to a national strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which began on 25 September 2025.

Canada Post has confirmed that no mail is currently moving within Canada and that all international items received since the start of the strike are being held in secure storage until further notice.

To protect customer mail and avoid unrealistic delivery expectations, the CIPS has halted acceptance of all classes of Canadian-bound, including letter post, parcel post, and Express Mail Service (EMS) items.

“As requested by Canada Post, the Cayman Islands Postal Service is suspending all dispatches of mail to Canada with immediate effect," said Postmaster General Sheena Glasgow. “We have also temporarily stopped accepting Canadian-bound mail from customers. Once we receive confirmation that the strike has ended and normal operations have resumed, we will promptly inform the public and restart service. While we understand that this disruption is inconvenient, it has resulted from circumstances beyond our jurisdiction. The Cayman Islands Postal Service sincerely appreciates our customers’ patience. We anticipate that Canada Post will be engaging with the union and will work to resume service as quickly as possible."

Canada Post has advised that no tracking scans will be performed during the strike. Once operations resume, stored mail will be processed on a first-in, first-out basis, but significant delays are expected as Canada Post clears the backlog and stabilises operations. The Ministry of District Administration and Home Affairs has received confirmation from several private courier services that their delivery routes to Canada remain unaffected by the strike. Customers seeking alternative options are encouraged to contact these providers directly for further details.

The Ministry and CIPS will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as new information becomes available.
