Annual Government Hurricane-Preparedness Exercise — Wednesday, 6 May 2026

6 May 2026 | Press Release | By: PLAHI PR

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Crews from the Public Works Department, National Roads Authority and Department of Vehicle & Equipment Services (under HCMI’s national preparedness framework)

  • install and remove hurricane shutters on 124+ Government buildings (including 16 official shelters)
  • test standby generators and water cisterns at key facilities
  • verify that all sites meet hurricane-readiness standards

WHEN?
Wednesday, 6 May 2026 | 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

WHERE?
Government buildings and hurricane shelters across Grand Cayman.
Shutter activity will be most visible at:
• George Town Primary School (≈ 8:30 a.m.)
• George Town Civic Centre (≈ 10:00 a.m.)

WHO?
Field teams from the Public Works Department (PWD), National Roads Authority (NRA) and Department of Vehicle & Equipment Services (DVES)—all departments of PLAHI—will carry out the drill in conjunction with Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI).

WHY?
Now in its 39th consecutive year, this drill—co-ordinated with HMCI—keeps personnel, equipment and procedures storm-ready ahead of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which begins 1 June. No storm is currently threatening the Cayman Islands.

What residents should do

  1. Stay calm – tomorrow’s shutter work is only a drill.
  2. Use the reminder to review your own hurricane plan, supplies and insurance.
