Water Incident at Governor's Beach

The Department of Environment has consulted two international marine species bite specialists and after careful examination of photos of the bite, both experts independently confirmed that the recent fish bite was not caused by a shark and was more likely from a barracuda. The DoE is continuing to consult with the bite experts while carrying out in-water surveillance and collecting low level drone imagery of the area for further analysis.

Barracudas play an important role in the reef ecosystem by helping control fish populations within our ocean food web. Bite incidents are extremely rare. However, barracudas sometimes follow schools of smaller fish into shallows near the shoreline, bringing them closer to people. In these situations, they may mistake shiny objects like jewellery for the flash of a fish. Swimmers and snorkelers may wish to exercise caution by removing jewellery and being mindful when schools of small fish are present or near them.

Following last night's statement regarding the visitor injured in the water off Governor's Beach, local authorities can confirm she has been treated by the Health Services Authority for a non-life-threatening injury and remains under observation this morning. She is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Department of Environment is working to confirm the species involved. While initial assessments and eye witness testimony pointed to a possible encounter with a barracuda or shark, this remains under review as more information becomes available.

Local authorities are aware of an incident involving a visitor who sustained a non-life-threatening injury while in the water off Governors Beach earlier today. An assessment from marine specialists suggest it was most likely an accidental encounter with a predatory fish, such as a barracuda or a shark, during a feeding event.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the individual was safely transported to the hospital to receive treatment for the injury. Our hearts go out to the visitor, and we wish her a full and swift recovery.

While marine life encounters resulting in injury are exceptionally rare in the Cayman Islands, local authorities encourage beach-goers to remain mindful of their surroundings, while honoring our vibrant natural environment.
