Students Urged To Pursue Tourism Jobs

The Minister for Tourism and Transport, the Hon. Kenneth Bryan spent some time last Friday (3rd February) with students at the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) to discuss career pathways available in the Tourism industry.

The students, who are currently enrolled in the CIFEC Workplace Hospitality Skills course, were introduced to a wide range of careers within the different sectors of the industry, including front and back-of-house positions and areas for those leaning toward roles in management, administration, and entrepreneurship.

In the presentation, the Minister gave a broad explanation of careers available within the different sectors of the industry. Taking the students on a journey through the tourism and hospitality industries, he spoke about positions in accommodations, activities, attractions, transport, and food & beverage services.

Mr. Bryan also explained the importance tourism holds within our islands’ economy and offered information on training and further education. Some educational opportunities supported by the Ministry and Department of Tourism include the annual Ministry of Tourism scholarship, the WineSchool3 Bartender Training, and the recent Inspire Cayman Training in water sports-related fields.

“As Minister for Tourism, it is one of my goals to encourage more Caymanians, especially young people, to consider jobs in hospitality,” said Minister Bryan. “I am proud to contribute to the training and development of our young people because there are a lot of opportunities available for them to grow professionally within the Cayman Islands tourism sector,” he added.

The presentation ended with a Q&A session where Minister Bryan gave insight into some of the most burning issues in Cayman’s tourism recovery process.
