Inspiring Growth and Change

27 March 2025 | Blog | By: CIG Communications

Lauren Knight is fondly known around the Government Administration Building for always saying hello with a smile to everyone she crosses, giving a hug when she can see one may need it and telling a good joke to brighten up a tough day.

As Deputy Chief Officer (Strategic Operations and Governance) within the Portfolio of the Civil Service (PoCS), Lauren plays a vital role in supporting the Chief Officer in providing strategic human resources advice, leading public sector reform initiatives, and supporting good governance. Primarily through the development of Civil Service policy, her work is driven by a commitment to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our Civil Service, making it a better place for all employees.

Enhancing the Civil Service Landscape

In her role, this former Cayman Islands Government Employee of the Month engages in active research and development of policies that align with the organisation’s mission and goals. Her work requires a deep understanding of current regulations and the needs of the workforce.

Lauren’s advisory role not only supports the PoCS Chief Officer, but also the Deputy Governor, ensuring the Civil Service operates smoothly and effectively. Additionally, the range of operational and strategic human resources advice and services she delivers to other Civil Service entities and the broader public sector, fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Major Policy Initiatives

Throughout her career, Lauren has led several major policy initiatives that have positively impacted the workforce. Notably, she championed the Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Discrimination Policy, which was a critical step toward creating a safer, more respectful workplace.

Recently, she made significant contributions by assisting with amendments to the
Personnel Regulations, which expanded maternity and paternity benefits, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting families. She also developed the Parental Leave Policy. This operationalised the Personnel Regs amendments by providing consistent service-wide standards for managing parental leave, ensuring equitable benefits for all new parents in the Civil Service.

"Bringing about changes to increase maternity and paternity leave has been a highlight of my career," she notes.

During the pandemic, she created the Dynamic COVID-19 Policy, which was essential for navigating the challenges posed by COVID-19 while prioritising staff safety.

Additionally, her introduction of lateral flow testing protocols for government entities helped maintain a safe environment during this challenging time. She recalls, “Keeping our staff and the country safe during the pandemic was a significant responsibility, and I’m proud of the role I played in this effort.”

On the Lighter Side
With her gracefully commanding six-foot presence and ready wit, she has had the honour of hosting the Deputy Governor’s Employee of the Year Ceremony four times. It is role she cherishes as it allows her to celebrate the hard work and dedication of fellow civil servants. "It always brings me joy to recognise those who go above and beyond! Plus, I quite enjoy getting all dolled up and being on TV!" she adds with a grin.

A Personal Reflection
Lauren vividly remembers her first day as a civil servant in the Internal Audit Service back in 2014. Noticing the parking spaces reserved for Employee of the Month and senior members of staff she quickly determined that she would work hard to secure both spots in her career. Today, as a Deputy Chief Officer, she has achieved both goals and continues to drive her team forward.

A strong advocate for secondment opportunities, Lauren shares her own transformative experience during an 18-month secondment to England, where she advanced her internal auditing skills. “It broadened my perspective and enhanced my capabilities. Whether an internal or external secondment, such opportunities are excellent ways for civil servants to learn and develop; so, where possible, pursue these opportunities if you can,” she encourages her colleagues.

Inspiring Change and Future Growth
The importance of connecting with colleagues, especially younger and new civil servantsas they dream to achieve their own goals is of utmost importance to her. “I make it a point to sit down with them, offering guidance and motivation to help them grow within the service. The support I received from the DG, Hon Franz Manderson, and Chief Officer Gloria McField, has been instrumental in my own success – why wouldn’t I want to actively play a role like that for others!”

Her journey in the Civil Service has been one of growth, learning, and impactful contributions. “I am proud to serve in a capacity that not only supports our employees but also drives meaningful change in our public sector,” she said.

As she continues to advance in her career, Lauren remains committed to fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for all civil servants. As John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” This quote resonates with her as she strives to inspireothers.
