Ebanks Twins Honoured with Cultural Luminary Awards

In a celebration of Cayman’s cultural artists and creatives, twin brothers Mark and Matthew Ebanks were recognised with prestigious Cultural Luminary awards at the 2024 Heroes Day event held in January. The awards ceremony highlighted their remarkable contribution to the arts, and will be featured in a special news story in early March on CIG TV. We ask the public to please stay tuned to Government channels for the premier of that upcoming episode.
The artistic duo, both long-standing clients of the Sunrise Adult Training Centre (SATC), have participated in the Centre’s Vocational Programme for many years. Their artwork, often inspired by local historic landmarks, national symbols, and the natural flora and fauna of the Cayman Islands, continues to appeal to the local community and visitors alike. Additionally, they both show a keen interest in portraiture, and have produced commissioned works for many government officials over the years.
Mark and Matthew's productivity extends beyond the studio, as they both hold gainful employment within the community. Matthew has been an esteemed employee at Reflections for over a decade, and Mark has been contributing his skills to KidsAbility since 2015 and the Book Nook since 2016, where he has also been a driving force in promoting the business during holiday seasons.
Their artwork is available for purchase at the Sunrise Adult Training Centre (Eden House, 80 Shedden Rd.), with a new series of drawings being unveiled in 2024. They actively participate in local events, such as Red Sky at Night, where their artwork is exhibited and sold. Their presence at these events not only enriches the cultural fabric of the community but also serves as a testament to what can be achieved when you avail yourself of good support, keep hope, courage, and determination in your heart, and put your best foot forward every single day.
As the community rallies behind these outstanding individuals, there is a shared sentiment that their talents could be further showcased with the opportunity to intern in fields such as event planning and promotions. Both brothers possess unique skills that make them valuable assets in these fields, and the Centre stands ready to support them and potential employers in any career path they choose to pursue.
Director at SATC Kim Voaden shared, "I am honoured to witness the growth and success of these young men.
At SATC, we believe in celebrating diversity and empowering individuals to pursue their passions. These two gentlemen have demonstrated that despite challenges, with the right support system, we all can achieve remarkable feats. We are here not only to acknowledge their triumphs but also to offer our continued support as they strive to improve, progress, and contribute to the Cayman community.
As we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mark and Matthew, we want to emphasize that SATC is more than a training centre – it is a community that celebrates, supports, and uplifts individuals to reach their fullest potential. We look forward to witnessing their continued success and are excited to see where their artistic journey takes them next."
Deputy Premier and Minister of Investment, Innovation, and Social Development (MIISD) André Ebanks remarked, “It was truly an honour to be part of the recognition ceremony on Heroes Day, celebrating the incredible achievements of Caymanians, Mark and Matthew Ebanks. I take great pride in acknowledging the exceptional talents of these two remarkable individuals as their contributions to the arts illustrate the importance of embracing and celebrating diversity within our society. Witnessing these young men receive Cultural Luminary awards was a moving experience and reaffirms the Government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that values the contributions of every individual. On behalf of the Cayman Islands Government, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to them both. Their recognition on Heroes Day is a celebration of their talent, resilience, and positive impact they have had on the Cayman Islands.”
