Dr. Alan Wheeler brings more than two decades of experience in mosquito research and control to the Cayman Islands Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU), where he serves as Director. Since assuming leadership in 2020, he has prioritized shifting MRCU’s approach from reactive to environmentally sustainable, preventative mosquito control.

Dr. Wheeler began his journey with MRCU in 1999 as a Research Officer, quickly establishing himself as a key contributor to mosquito management strategies. He was promoted to Deputy Director in 2003 and played a crucial role in advancing research-driven vector control programs. He holds a B.Sc. in Applied Zoology from Bangor University, an M.Sc. in Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology, and a Ph.D. from Keele University, where his research focused on controlling insect vectors of leishmaniasis.

Before joining MRCU, Dr. Wheeler worked as an environmental chemist in the UK, monitoring heavy metal pollution from industrial processes. Under his leadership, MRCU continues to enhance its integrated mosquito management efforts, emphasizing sustainability and innovation in vector control. His extensive expertise and commitment to public health make him an integral force in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases in the Cayman Islands.
