CIFS Mclaughlin named Chief Officer's Choice & CIG Employee Of The Month
The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) is pleased to recognise Station Manager Ian McLaughlin, who has received the Ministry’s Chief Officer’s Choice Award and has also been selected as the overall Cayman Islands Government Employee of the Month for May 2026 under the Deputy Governor’s Award Programme.
Station Manager McLaughlin was recognised in the Developing Exceptional Leadership category, for demonstrating strong engagement, motivation, and results-driven leadership, while positively impacting the lives of those he serves. His recognition follows his exceptional leadership, professionalism, and commitment to public service during the recent landfill fire.
As the first Incident Commander at the landfill fire, SM McLaughlin skillfully coordinated a complex multi agency emergency response, maintained clear operational control under immense pressure, and provided critical strategic updates to Gold Command for dissemination to senior government officials. His leadership ensured a structured and coordinated approach during a challenging, high risk emergency.
Chief Fire Officer Dwight ‘Randy’ Rankin congratulated SM McLaughlin, noting that his performance reflects the standards and values of the Cayman Islands Fire Service.
“Station Manager McLaughlin’s leadership during the landfill fire was a strong example of operational excellence. He remained composed under pressure, supported his crews, and helped ensure that the response was coordinated, disciplined, and effective. His recognition is a proud moment for CIFS and a reminder of the standards our officers bring to the job every single day.”
Beyond the incident itself, Station Manager McLaughlin demonstrated outstanding dedication to service by leading Recruit Breathing Apparatus and Vehicle Extrication training before immediately responding to the emergency and assuming command. Throughout the operation, he also prioritised the welfare of frontline crews, providing encouragement and support while maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence.
Acting Chief Officer Debbie-Ann Whittaker said the award highlights the importance of recognising officers who consistently go beyond the expectations of their role.
“This recognition is well deserved. Station Manager McLaughlin’s actions during the landfill fire showed leadership in its truest form — clear command, care for his crews, and a steady focus on public safety. His willingness to lead training, respond immediately when called, and guide a complex emergency operation speaks to his character, training, and commitment to service.”
The presentation took place during the Deputy Governor’s farewell visit to the Central Fire Station, where senior leaders, colleagues, and members of the Fire Service gathered to recognise Station Manager McLaughlin’s contribution to public service.
Hon. Deputy Governor Franz Manderson said SM McLaughlin’s recognition reflects the best of the Civil Service and the importance of leadership under pressure.
“Station Manager McLaughlin demonstrated calm, capable, and decisive leadership, which the public expects from our uniformed services. In moments of emergency, leadership matters, and his actions during the landfill fire showed professionalism, courage, and a deep commitment to protecting this country. I am pleased to see him recognised not only by his Ministry, but across the wider Civil Service as Employee of the Month.”
SM McLaughlin’s decisive leadership, commitment to excellence, and steadfast service exemplify the values of the Cayman Islands Fire Service and make him a deserving recipient of both the Chief Officer’s Choice Award and the Cayman Islands Government Employee of the Month Award.
