Cayman Observes Intl Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Ministry of Social Development & Innovation, in partnership with the Sunrise Adult Training Centre (SATC), invites the public to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on Tuesday, 3 December 2024. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” underscores the Cayman Islands Government's ongoing commitment to empowering persons with disabilities to lead meaningful lives and contribute to the community.
Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism & Ports, and Social Development & Innovation, highlighted the importance of this day in recognizing the leadership potential within the community of persons with disabilities. He praised organizations like Sunrise Adult Training Centre for their role in fostering inclusion and empowerment.
“This year’s theme reminds us of the leadership and potential within our community of persons with additional needs,” said Deputy Premier Bryan. “Sunrise Adult Training Centre plays a crucial role in helping individuals build the skills and confidence they need to thrive. Their work aligns with our vision for a more inclusive Cayman Islands, where everyone is empowered to succeed. I look forward to working with Sunrise to effect continued positive developments to their programmes and services in the upcoming months.”
SATC, Cayman’s key resource for adults with additional needs, is committed to promoting functional independence, self-actualization, active community participation, and a sense of belonging, through its Vocational Training, Therapeutic Day Programme, and Client Welfare Coordination offerings.
Kim Voaden, Director of SATC, emphasized the relevance of this year’s theme. “The International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us of the value of inclusion and the importance of amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities,” Voaden said. “At Sunrise, we create opportunities for our clients to lead and inspire change, both within our programmes and in the broader community. This year’s theme reflects our mission to build a Cayman Islands that celebrates diversity and champions the leadership of all its citizens.”
The Ministry encourages the public to reflect on what further steps can be taken in their own workplaces and community groups to promote inclusion and equity, as well as looking to celebrate and support the strengths and leadership potential in all persons with special needs and disabilities.
On this important day, the Ministry of Social Development & Innovation reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not only included but empowered to lead, innovate, and inspire.
