Bullying Prevention Month

25 October 2022 | Press Release | By: Stacey-Ann Anderson

Every October, millions of people observe Anti-bullying Prevention Month, a significant initiative to prevent bullying and promote kindness and inclusion.

Over time, bullying has become a pervasive problem in our schools, negatively impacting our children and young people's physical, emotional, social and psychological health.

The Ministry of Education stands resolute against bullying of any kind.

So I am incredibly pleased to support this month-long initiative that underpins the Ministry's commitment to ensuring that schools develop a welcoming, supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes the well-being of all students and staff.

In the spirit of this commitment, the Ministry of Education developed the National Anti-bullying Policy for School Students in 2020.

The policy sets out schools' responsibilities to counter bullying, establish consistent expectations and promote an understanding of all bullying-related issues.

It also requires educational institutions (public & private) to recognise, respond to and report incidents of bullying swiftly and effectively, ensuring that all students can feel happy and safe.

I am elated with our recent progress in strengthening the National Anti-bullying Policy through legislation. More specifically, Parliament's passage of the supporting Education (Amendment) Act.

I wholeheartedly thank members of the Law Reform Commission, my dedicated team within the Ministry of Education and my Government colleagues, especially Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, for their support that ensured the readiness of the crucial Education (Amendment) Bill for its advancement into legislation.

I look forward to the finalisation of the Anti-bullying (Schools) Regulations that will guide schools as they seek to implement their anti-bullying policies.

It is my fervent hope that through our collective efforts, students and parents will not only feel more supported when confronted with incidences of bullying, but the Ministry's message of a zero-tolerance to bullying is also clearly conveyed.

In closing, I applaud the Family Resource Centre, the United Against Bullying Foundation and others involved in promoting this all-important initiative locally.

I also invite others to exercise vigilance and respond swiftly and effectively to bullying to protect our children and ensure their well-being.

May God bless you all!
